The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series makes a stop at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend, and it is shaping up to be an interesting race.
It started in the opening practice Friday when drivers were slipping and sliding because of a compound that was sprayed on the track to try to increase grip in the top lane. It continued in qualifying that evening when several big names struggled. To top it off, Mother Nature washed out both practices Saturday, so we head into Sunday’s race without a lot of recent info to use to our advantage.
All the question marks further bolster my decision to play it safe with big names and reliable in the Yahoo game. I tend to employ this strategy anyway at the 1.5-mile ovals, and with the lack of practice time this weekend, I’ll be sticking with drivers from top teams who have been having success at the mile-and-a-half ovals all season.
In the NASCAR.com game, I’ll be modifying my typical strategy just a bit. At most 1.5-mile tracks, I like to load my lineup with three drivers who I feel can provide dominator and stage points. However, there are so many bigger names starting deeper in the field this weekend, that I’m going to go with two dominators and one driver who has a ton of upside through place differential.
In the FOX game, I’m going after a big points day by loading up on the quality drivers starting deeper in the field. Four of my five picks are starting outside the Top 15, and three are starting 25th or worse. It’s not often Top 10-caliber drivers qualify this poorly, and this weekend, multiple drivers had poor qualifying runs. I suggest trying to take advantage of all the place differential bonus points that are out there.
